In the last 24 years since qualifying
I have been involved in all facets of the commercial hog production industry.
Milestones in my career to date:
- Initially after qualifying I worked with the animals putting theory into practice-feeding pigs
and gaining experience on large breeding farms.
- I then became involved in the running of the farms at upper management level.
- I was involved in:
- The planning, design, building and commissioning of a 30 ton per hour specialist pig feed mill
- Ration formulation and testing the animals' responses.
- Computerised wet-feeding systems.
- Dry feed systems.
- Efficiency improvement.
- Problem solving.
- Size of units ranged from 300 to 3000 sows
- Planning, design, and building of new units
- Planning and implementing large unit depopulation
- Design of modifications to existing units
- Liase with Local Authorities and EPA(Environment Protection Agency)
- Establishment of a genetic programme which entailed:
- Nucleus breeding programme
- Establishing within herd multiplication programmes
- Introducing on farm AI: drawing, diluting and using semen
- Terminal sire production
- High health importation of genes
- Agreeing and organising the sale of slaughter hogs.
- Large scale equipment procurement
- Financial control and planning
- Involvement on committees:
- IFA(Irish Farmers Association) Pigs Committee
- Environmental Advisory Group to Local Authority
- Committee for Genetic Evaluation and Improvement
- National Pig Health Council
In September 1997 I established my own consultancy firm
"Mc D Advisory Services Ltd."
Achievements to date:
- Set up a pig producer sales group
- Investigated available technologies of slurry treatment
- Involved in Research and Development of computerised control equipment
- Negotiated on behalf of Irish firm contractual agreements with U.S. Co.
- Launched new products in U.S. Market
- Trial equipment installed and monitored for the last year on a large US hog production farm.
